Thanksgiving is fast approaching; leaves are turning funny colors and falling off of trees, and the spirit of harvest is all around us (not that I’ll be doing much harvesting). So put out your decorative gourds and get ready to celebrate with friends and family. If you’ve got a big gathering planned, here are a few Thanksgiving mobile apps that could help things go smoothly.
Thanksgiving: A bon appétit Manual. This is a nice, specific holiday guide, available on iPhones only. It sports a quick, clean interface, punctuated with beautiful pictures. The recipe guides will help you gather the ingredients, tools and utensils you’ll need to put everything together. Whether you’re looking for just a single dish or an entire menu, this app can accommodate you. It will even build a schedule for you to follow when it comes time to cook your many Thanksgiving dishes. This free app is available on iOS only.
Thanksgiving Menu Maker. This mobile app has a slightly different feature-set than bon appétit’s, though they serve similar purposes. Menu Maker lets you put together a menu to make sure you’re ready for the big day and provides the recipes and instructions you’ll need when it comes time to cook. It has a good number of dishes on file and useful instructions for each, including tips and videos to help with some of the more complicated steps. These apps can be a great help during the cooking process, and Thanksgiving Menu Maker is free, so you might as well give it a try!
Allthecooks Recipes. First of all, this app is beautiful and spectacularly useful. Second, it will make you hungry every time you open it. And third, it has a Thanksgiving Recipes category ready to go, delivering recipes for highly rated Thanksgiving classics right to your phone. It’s not a Thanksgiving oriented app, otherwise, and if you want to experiment this Thanksgiving, Allthecooks has everything you need to find a variety of delicious meal ideas. This Thanksgiving mobile app has a gigantic database of recipes for all occasions (including the uneventful ones). Since the first two items on this list were iOS only, Android users may feel a bit left out of the holiday recipe cheer, Allthecooks isn’t Thanksgiving specific, but it is free and available for both iOS and Android–Download it for the holidays, use it all year round.
Cookie Dozer Thanksgiving. If you’re interested in a Thanksgiving themed game, this colorful app is a pleasant time waster, the kind of thing that will perform well at getting kids to sit quiet while you try to organize the meal. The game itself is essentially a digital representation of the coin pusher game you’ve likely seen at arcades, but rather than a boring field of coins, Cookie Dozer Thanksgiving presents a colorful collage of festive fall desserts. It’s free, with inexpensive in-app purchases available to replenish your supply of digital cookies. It’s easy on the eyes, and easy on the brain if you need to relax for a moment. Check it out on both iOS and Android!
Hand Turkey – A Multi-Touch Thanksgiving App. This one is just plain wacky. Load this onto your iPad or Android tablet and enjoy the traditional Thanksgiving pastime of turning your hand into a cartoon turkey. Using multi-touch input, the app turns your hand into a digital turkey. But the fun doesn’t stop there; decorate your turkey with a variety of costuming options until it is so silly looking that you can’t help but laugh. Sure it’s meant for kids, but it has an inexplicable appeal that tends to gather small crowds around your tablet, all making suggestions about which hat the turkey should be wearing. Check it out for free for iOS and Android.
