Several leaks floating around the internet had confirmed the specifications of the upcoming Note 3 and the fact that Samsung is working upon its own smartwatch. But what wasn’t a part of the expectations, was the fact that both the devices produced by the South Korean giant are to be released in the same event. Samsung representatives have confirmed the launch of the Galaxy ‘Gear’ smartwatch in its own event on September 4, alongside its newest iteration of the flagship phablet, the Galaxy Note 3. How far September 4 is you ask? It is the coming Wednesday.
The Galaxy Gear is one of the newest breed of consumer electronics, a product that falls under the category of Wearable Technologies. This category is currently making waves all over the globe, with manufacturers of all walks working on projects related in theme. No, we’re not talking about LED or Speaker embedded tee-shirts anymore. These are truly next gen, sci-fi inspired gadgets that were previously only seen in James Bond movies. Google Glass for example is a form of wearable tech that is focused on augmented reality. It is easily one of the most talked about product and is immensely anticipated.
The Galaxy Gear will be a device based on Android and according to Samsung representatives, has been confirmed to not house a flexible display, which is surprising since in the past year bendable displays had taken over the limelight. Samsung had filed a patent for flexible displays and had also presented bendable phone screens in the CES and MWC, thus elevating the flawed expectations. The Galaxy Gear is bound to influence the gadget apps sector and is likely to induce third party developers for coding of the soon to come waves of apps.
The capabilities of the smartwatch are yet to be known and Samsung seems to have done a great job by remaining secretive despite the air of anticipation that lingers around the Gear. Prolific leaker Evleaks posted screenshots that confirm the watch will pair with your smartphone using Bluetooth. The pairing procedure is performed by a single tap between the devices using NFC. It is bound to provide different watch faces, both analog and digital just like other Smartwatches. It may also consist of direct access to the App store, making installing applications to your phone an easier task. Samsung’s own proprietary app story may reside in the device for its own gadget apps.
The device may have a GPS unit embedded, though asking for a cellular chip sounds too farfetched. The Smartwatch will provide notifications for an array of organization services, like calendar, email, alarm clock etc. Social Networking notifications may also pop on-screen for services like Facebook, Twitter and Google+.
Smartwatches are a part of the wearable tech revolution. A propelling/kick-starting factor for the sector can be said to be Pebble e-Watch, the crowd-funding platform Kickstarter’s most famously backed project. Smartwatches have also been developed by Sony and several other manufacturers, but haven’t quite caught up as yet. With a big player like Samsung entering the segment, changes are bound to occur. Yes, it there have been frenzied rumours of the Cupertino Giant also working on a smartwatch, which might as well change everything. Though there have been no solid leaks regarding the Apple smartwatch, it is highly likely that the company will launch the product alongside its newest generation of iPhone(s).
But the question in making is whether the consumer is ready for such a product, which may be so interfering in our daily life that it becomes a distraction? Will continual notifications be a building source of frustration for users? Only the upcoming event can answer our queries. Development for the gadget apps sector is another factor to look out for. Only a few companies are taking efforts to make forays into the field, including the much renowned Software Developers India. It is highly advisable for companies to roll out applications for the wave of gadgets to come, be future proof and bolster your corporate identity.
